Thesis/Dissertation – Reference List | APA Style Guide

Use the author-date method of citation for quotations (exact words of another author) and paraphrasing (summarising the words and ideas of one or more authors).

Research Databases Alphabetical List - Michael Schwartz

Even if you obtain your article from an online database or another source, try to locate the URL of the journal's home page that provides access to the article.

If the quotation is over 95 words, you must indent the entire quotation and start the quotation on a new line. No quotation marks are required. Cite the quoted source after the final punctuation mark.

If the works are published in the same year , list alphabetically by title, then assign 'a', 'b', 'c', as needed. This may mean that (Hartley 7557a) is not the first in-text citation.

*** Please note that the guidelines for citing articles retrieved from databases can often call for the author to use his or her own judgement on whether or not to provide a URL or database name. Most often, a DOI will be provided. For more detailed information about citing databases in your List of References, consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association , p. 698-699.

QUT Numbered is based on the Numbered/Vancouver style (which is based on the National Library of Medicine's ICMJE Recommendations). If you need style information for something we don't cover refer to:

When citing from a one-off proceeding or mongraph (book), use the same format as for a book or book chapter. Regularly published proceedings use the same format as journal or periodical articles.

If you need to cite from a book of readings, use the date for that publication. If page numbers are required in text, use the book of readings page numbers, not the page numbers from the original source.

APA style encourages the inclusion of page numbers, but it is not mandatory. Include page or paragraph numbers if it will help reader find the information.

APA format follows the author-date method of in-text citation. The author's last name and the year of publication of the source must appear in the text. Include page number(s) if you need to be specific (. direct quotes)
